Today canals are a common sight across the country, passing through towns and cities, popular for activities such as pleasure cruising and fishing. They are seen as a leisurely way to travel, away from our busy roads and railways.

However, canals in their golden age were the motorways of their day, bustling with activity and feeding industry. The Bridgewater Canal was the catalyst for this canal age, which lasted until the nineteenth century and the arrival of railway mania.
