A Lasting Legacy

The construction of the Bridgewater Canal caused waves of interest. Inspired by the Duke and his team, others followed suit and many more canals were built, such as the Trent and Mersey which opened in 1777, the Oxford Canal completed in 1790, and the Rochdale Canal, opened for business in 1804. A transport network was created across the country - the canal age had arrived.
